Australia‟s experience with CGT is that over time, rents generally have increased at the same rate as inflation. This was in line with pre-CGT rental increases.

Asset sales

Key says on asset sales that he’s been incredibly transparent.

Yet back in 2008 he promised “I’m not interested in selling assets – I’m all about building assets”. (John Key Speech, My Key Commitments to You, 12 October 2008). Now he’s selling them.

Neutral tax cut

Key says that across the board tax cuts have been neutral.

National’s tax cuts for the most well off were supposed to paid for with the GST. They actually cost an extra $1.1 billion in their first nine months.

Child poverty

Key says kids in poverty are by and large are in benefit dependent households.

Half of the children now living in poverty are from working families whose wages were so low they could not adequately care for them.

NZ Super

John Key says NZ Super is affordable long term.

Treasury says the cost of Super will double over the next 40 years. They warn if we don’t raise the age of eligibility we’ll have to increase GST to 19% or people will have to pay $30 more a week in income tax.
